How Adjectives Work In Vietnamese
Adjectives are essential to any language, and Vietnamese is no exception. In Vietnamese, adjectives describe or modify nouns, just like in English. However, there are some differences in how adjectives are used in Vietnamese that you need to know.
Position Of Adjectives
One of the most significant differences between Vietnamese and English is the position of adjectives. In English, adjectives usually come before the noun they modify, while in Vietnamese, adjectives come after the noun they modify.
For instance, “một ngôi nhà đẹp” (a beautiful house) or “một con chó to” (a big dog). You can see that the adjectives đẹp (beautiful) and to (big) came in after the noun.
Adjectives As Nouns
In Vietnamese, adjectives can also be used as nouns. To do this, add a “transformer” to the adjective. Some common transformers include “sự” and “niềm.” For example, “niềm hạnh phúc” means “happiness,” and “sự đau khổ” means “grief.”. (hạnh phúc: happy; đau khổ: grieve)
Adjectives As Adverbs
Another cool feature of Vietnamese adjectives is their ability to function as adverbs without any modification. In English, we usually add “-ly” at the end of an adjective, making it an adverb. In Vietnamese, you don’t need to change the adjective to make it an adverb. For example, “hạnh phúc” (happy) can also mean “happily.”
